The GTTA tournament season resumed this week with the rearranged Capelles Ladies Handicap Singles. In an event initially scheduled for the end of January, Erin Vaudin underlined the recent improvement in her gameplay and took home the trophy, beating Juliette Yeaman in the final.

There was a healthy mix of new and more experienced players, playing the 21-point system with best-of-3 games.  The handicap system was working well to produce some very evenly-matched contests, with young Emily Gavey the pick of the group stage with some excellent attacking shots. However she ultimately went down in the quarter final after a tight match with experienced Island Games player Paula Le Ber.

The most nail-biting match of the evening was in the first semi-final between Yeaman and Jenny Powell, and it was Yeaman who eventually prevailed 23-21 in the 3rd game, successfully clawing back a 7 point handicap deficit on her opponent.

This earned her a place in the final against a confident Vaudin and the youngster took charge of the contest from the outset with some assured attacking play, using her 4-point start to claim the victory 21-9, 21-18. Next tournament of this busy season is the Lions Spot for Sport, followed by the Ping Pong Championships on 10th April.
