Guernsey’s leading Junior Boys table tennis players concluded an extremely successful debut season in the Youth British Club Leagues this weekend.
The competition, previously known as the Junior British League, had not been attended by Guernsey for several years, however the return to action was fruitful as it saw Guernsey return as medallists following a strong weekend which led to a second-placed finish. Given the system works on ranking points to determine the structures of the Divisions, the vital points gained by the players this season should lead to promotion next season.
The team to compete this weekend was Oskar Cleal and Barnaby Groves, who had also competed in the opening round of fixtures, as well as Luke Evans, who was making his debut in the competition.
The side went into the weekend in 2nd position in Division 9, the entry level Division of the leagues, knowing that a top 4 finish was likely – the league then splits into a top half and bottom half to determine the final positions.
The first match of the weekend at the Draycott and Long Eaton Table Tennis Centre in Derby was against 7th placed Irish based side Dublin 1 and a 4-2 victory was achieved. Cleal made a fast start to the weekend and was unbeaten. He dispatched Connor Sheehan in 4 sets before earning an impressive straight sets win over the number 1 Daniel Patterson. Groves was ousted in 5 sets by Patterson in the match opener, but he overcame Jack O’Connell in the penultimate match to put the win in sight. Evans duly converted in the final game of the match, with a nice 4 set win over Sheehan. He had earlier been unfortunate not to get past O’Connell, with the Irish player battling back from 2-1 down to come through over the distance.
The final match of the initial league phase saw an emphatic 5-1 win achieved over 6th placed side BATTS II. Cleal maintained his perfect start due to a 4-set win over Matthew Jones and close 5-set victory over Michael Dean. Groves was also unbeaten here thanks to a matching 5 set win over Dean, in a match where he battled back strongly from 2-0 down and a 4-set win over Nikolaos Fillipas in a match where all 3 sets won by Groves were 12-10. Evans fought back from 2-1 down to defeat Jones over the distance, however he was beaten by Fillipas in a close 4 set encounter.
Following the 2nd place finish, the Sarnian trio headed into the Top Half of Division 9 alongside the table topping London Academy 3 side, Ackworth TT 2 and Horsham TTC.
The first match of the new Division was a big challenge as it was against the table topping London Academy side and despite some large efforts, a 5-1 defeat was incurred, to the eventual champions. Groves was the sole victor in the encounter as he fought past Lewis MacSween in 5 sets. He came close in his other match with number 1 and England number 106 Junior Boy Yacoub Rahmani-Walentynski and lost 3-2 in the clash where he had led 2-1. London Academy changed their line-up for the fixture, bringing in Adam Riadi, who earlier in the day had been playing for their ‘A’ team in Division 3, and he proved formidable with dominant straight sets wins over Cleal and Evans. Evans came close against MacSween, narrowly falling 13-11 in the 5th set. The final match saw Cleal defeated by Rahmani-Walentynski in 4 sets, in another very close match.
The final day of action on Sunday commenced with a 5-1 win over Horsham TTC. Cleal started well with 2 strong wins, comfortably seeing off the challenge from Evan Erskine and Alain Shibu in straight sets. Groves continued his strong momentum with a 4-set win over Shibu and a straight sets win over Luke Harrison, whilst Evans defeated Harrison in 4 sets.
This led to a winner takes-all clash with Ackworth TT 2 to see who would finish as runners-up and take home the silver medals. The Ackworth side had inflicted a heavy 5-1 defeat on the Guernsey outfit when they met in October, however despite the one-sided nature of the scoreline, 3 of those 5 rubbers had been won over the full 5 set distance. The strong momentum built by the Guernsey side and the continued improvement of the players thanks to regular competition in the top Divisions of the local Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues proved key to the success as an excellent 4-2 win was obtained this time around. Groves was the player to excel as he was unbeaten. He started with a 4-set win over number 1, Muhammad Chishti, and he won the match to secure the medals when he defeated Alfie Mawson in straight sets in the final game of the weekend. Cleal showed great mental resilience in battling back from 2-1 down to defeat the strong Chishti in 5 sets to secure the medals, whilst Evans was a strong 4 set winner over Mawson. In the end it was Ackworth’s strong number 2 David Sherwood that was unbeaten, defeating Cleal in straight sets and Evans in 4.
The Guernsey team comprised of players aged only 15, 14 & 12, competing in an Under-19 league, often against much older players so the weekend’s results will stand them in good stead as they wait to see what Division they compete in next season
The Guernsey Boys team had a mixed weekend in the first round of Junior British League for the 2024/25 season in Draycott. Returning to league action after a number of years out, the newly qualified young Sarnians displayed some impressive performances against tough competition in Division 9 and demonstrated their ability to compete strongly at this level.
The team of Barnaby Groves, Oskar Cleal and Aiden Ozanne are all under-15, often playing against older opponents and endured a challenging start on Saturday morning. They experienced 5-1 defeats against London Academy 3 and Ackworth TT 2, with both opposition teams fielding players highly ranked in the national cadet standings. However, the Sarnians showed resilience and fought hard, with Ozanne defeating London’s Zacharia Sarri and Groves beating Muhammed Chishti, both 3-2.
As the weekend progressed, the team's fortunes improved. They secured a 4-2 win over Fusion 2, where Cleal and Ozanne were only narrowly defeated by strong English under-19 player Liyan Azis, and followed that up with impressive 6-0 victories over Horsham TTC and bottom-placed TJSB, the latter match featuring all wins in straight sets. These results propelled Guernsey to third place in the eight-team league, behind only London Academy and Ackworth, setting them up for a promising second weekend of action in February.
Guernsey’s debut season within the Veterans British Club league concluded in sensational fashion this weekend, where the Division 5 (Group 2) title was achieved. The Island’s leading Veterans exhibited some impressive play at the Draycott and Long Eaton Table Tennis Club in the East Midlands, their 4 dominant victories securing promotion to a higher division next season.
Phil Ogier, Jamie Ferbrache and Steve Ozanne all competed in the first weekend of action, however Jez Powell made his debut in the competition this time out, replacing Nye Matthew, who had played in the first round of fixtures way back in October. The successful weekend’s action saw the team finish impressively with an unbeaten season.
Saturday’s action was thick and fast as it saw 3 matches contested. There were no signs of rust or a slow start as Smash Table Tennis Kettering were emphatically whitewashed 6-0 by the Sarnian contingent in the morning. Powell was straight out of the blocks with a strong straight sets win over Barry Thompson and he followed up by dispatching Terence Clifton in 5 sets. Ferbrache overcame Clifton in 4 sets and Andy Logan in straight sets, whilst Steve Ozanne defeated Logan in 4 sets and Thompson in straight sets to conclude proceedings.
The emphatic nature continued into the afternoon match where another 6-0 whitewash was recorded, Foresters F on the wrong side of the result. Ogier headed into this weekend top of the averages with a 100% winning record, and he maintained this courtesy of a straight sets win over Chris Pullinger and a 4-set win over Stuart Seaholme. Ferbrache earned a super straight sets win over Seaholme, and he backed this up by defeating Barry Cheer in 4 sets in the final game of the match. Ozanne had a strong match in which he defeated both Pullinger and Cheer without dropping a set.
Saturday was concluded in style, as a 3 rd consecutive 6-0 whitewash was achieved, 4 th placed side Dyflin humbled. Ogier continued where he left off in the prior fixture as he defeated Thomas Fitzgerald and David Pender in straight sets. Powell returned to action well as he beat David Gibbons in straight sets and Pender in 4 sets in the match opener. Ozanne also dispatched Gibbons in straight sets, and he concluded the day’s play by earning a hard fought 4 set win over Pender. Whilst the side headed into the final day’s action with a good advantage at the top, 2 tough tests lie ahead on the final day’s play of the season against the strongest teams in the Division.
First up was a 3 rd placed Albert TTC side whom Guernsey had beaten 5-1 in October. The result this time was identical, and it was again only Nadeem Ahmed that was able to salvage anything from the fixture. Ogier moved one match closer to completing an unbeaten season when he comfortably defeated Phil Summers and David Freeston without dropping a set, whilst Ferbrache was also a straight sets winner over both Ahmed and Freeston, reversing his 4-set defeat to Ahmed in October. Ozanne picked up a straight sets win over Summers in the final match of the clash, however he was defeated in 4 sets by Ahmed. The implications of this victory were that the title was mathematically sealed ahead of the final fixture with title rivals Draycott 4, as the venue hosts were 2 points adrift and unable to overcome the sets for and against ratio, even with a 6-0 win. With no pressure, the Sarnians once more excelled and made up for the 3-3 draw between the sides earlier in the season, with a commanding 5-1 win. Ogier did indeed complete his superb feat of
finishing top of the averages with a 100% winning record and aptly he did this conclusively, with straight sets wins over Allan Lumpod and Tony Smith. Ferbrache finished his season well thanks to a 5-set win over Les Baker in a match which he had trailed 2-0 and a 4-set win over Lumpod. Powell started with a straight sets win over Smith, however he tasted defeat for the first time during the weekend in the final individual match of the season. Like Ferbrache, he too trailed Baker 2-0, before he earned a rare 11-0 success in the 3 rd end, followed by a narrow 12-10 triumph in the 4th . Whilst it looked like he had the momentum to complete the comeback, Baker managed to edge through 11-9 and restore a modicum of pride for his well beaten side.
The Veterans British Club League has been an excellent platform for Guernsey’s Veterans this campaign and progression to a higher Division next season will ensure increased challenge, which will continue to benefit the local players and their playing standards.
The Guernsey Table Tennis Association has enjoyed continued involvement within the Senior British National Leagues for many years now. This involvement has been fruitful and has enabled the Island’s leading players to improve the overall standard of the local game. Until this season however, Guernsey had never sent a team to compete in the Veterans British League. With the hosting of the extremely popular and successful Veterans Six Nations under our belt in September, it was finally the time for some of Guernsey’s leading Veterans to travel across the water and compete in the Veterans British Club League for the first time.
The destination was the impressive Draycott and Long Eaton Table Tennis Club in the East Midlands. The venue is the biggest in the East Midlands and is self-declared as having some of the best playing conditions within the UK. Whilst the Senior British Club League sees action spread across several venues within the UK, the Veterans is one of the exceptions, with all action taking place at the same venue. The competition is fierce and of a sizable scale, with action taking place across 6 Divisions, with 10 separate leagues in
operation. This all equates to an impressive 64 teams competing, meaning 32 matches took place in each of the 5 rounds contested over the weekend.
Due to Guernsey not having competed before, the Sarnians found themselves at the bottom of the pyramid in Division 5 (Group 2). It ended up being an excellent weekend of action, with Guernsey ending unbeaten and top of the table, 2 points clear of their nearest rivals. Whilst teams are comprised of 3 players, Guernsey sent a larger squad of 4 players, to spread the load of the busy weekend of action. Phil Ogier, Jamie Ferbrache, Steve Ozanne, and Nye Matthew all excelled during the weekend, with all players winning at least half of their matches, including an unbeaten 8 wins for Ogier, who tops the averages.
First up on Saturday morning was Foresters F, and a familiar face was in their ranks in the form of Stuart Seaholme, the recent Over 75’s Men’s Doubles winner at the Guernsey hosted Veterans Home Nations competition. Seaholme gave a good account for himself against Ogier in particular, with Ogier needing to fight back from 2-1 down to edge through the final 2 ends 12-10, 11-8. Ferbrache dispatched Seaholme in 4 sets in the match opener and followed up with a 4-set win over Chris Pullinger. Ogier dispatched Faldie Adams in 4 sets in his other match, whilst Steve Ozanne got his campaign underway successfully, defeating Pullinger in straight sets. The whitewash did slip away in the end, as Faldie bounced back from losing the opening end and dispatched Ozanne in 4 sets in the final match of the clash.
Next saw a matching 5-1 victory obtained against Dyflin and saw the debut of Matthew. Matthew defeated David Gibbons in 4 sets, before he recovered from a 2-1 deficit to earn a gritty 5 set win over Thomas Fitzgerald. Ogier also had a tussle with Fitzgerald in the match opener and he did just enough to win the deciding end 13-11. His other win came against David Pender in straight sets. Ozanne beat Gibbons in straight sets but was defeated in 4 sets by Pender. The first day of action saw completion of a trio of 5-1 wins, this time Smash Table Tennis Kettering on the wrong side of the heavy defeat. This fixture was however a lot closer than the score suggests, with 4 matches going the full 5 set distance, with Ogier rested. The only comfortable wins were in straight sets and were obtained by Matthew and Ozanne against Barry Thompson. Matthew’s other win came over Terence Clifton in 5 sets, 11-8 the score in the final end. Ozanne on the other hand did excellently to fight back from 2-0 down in a 5-set win over Gary Pells. Ferbrache narrowly lost out in 5 sets to Clifton in the match opener, despite having led 2-1, but he bounced back well with a comeback win of his own. Like Ozanne, he too trailed Pells 2-0, before powering through in 5 sets.
Sitting pretty heading into the 2 fixtures on Sunday, a tough test lie ahead against the closest rivals for the title and venue hosts, Draycott 4. The return of Ogier was crucial to the result as he was unbeaten. His first win came against Allan Lumpod in straight sets, before he navigated past the tricky Tony Smith in 5 sets. Matthew was the player to pick up the pivotal third rubber as he defeated Malcolm Truman in 4 sets. The fixture saw the other 3 rubbers picked up by Draycott in straight sets.
A top place finish to the weekend was ensured after a fourth 5-1 win of the weekend was obtained over third placed Albert TTC in the final game. Ogier once more in good form and he put in his most assured performances of the weekend during comfortable straight sets wins over Phil Summers and Nadeem Ahmed. Ozanne also finished strongly with a 4-set win over Lichao Geng and a 5-set win over Summers where he won the decisive end 12-10. Ferbrache closed proceedings on the weekend with a 4-set win over Geng but fell to Ahmed by the same score earlier in the fixture. With promotions hopes high on the radar, the side will now have a long wait until 22nd & 23rd February next year to conclude their debut campaign.
Guernsey’s leading Island table tennis players concluded their Senior British Club Leagues campaign with mixed success this weekend, but a travel interrupted season led to disappointing overall final positions in the leagues. The missed fixtures in December played a part in Guernsey 1 finishing at the foot of National A-1, where the 2 automatic 9-0 whitewashes caused them to finish behind Colin Deaton 1 by virtue of their sets ratio being just 1 set worse. Guernsey 2 on the other hand concluded their season in 7th place within National C-1.
Despite the overall disappointing seasons, there were some strong performances throughout the weekend from both teams, each of which recorded a victory and pushed some strong teams well at the Halton Regional Table Tennis Centre in Widnes, Chesire.
The weekend kickstarted in strong fashion for the Guernsey 1 side as a 6-3 victory was obtained over an Allied TTC team that finished in 6th position. Twins Joshua and Lawrence Stacey were pivotal to this success as each enjoyed a perfect start to their singles action, with 2 wins apiece. Joshua had to do this the hard way as he trailed 2-1 in both of his clashes. His first clash saw him win the final 2 sets 11-8, 11-7 over Allied’s number 1 and England Number 84 Adam Webster, whilst he cruised through the final 2 sets 11-4, 11-5 against Fraser Massey. Lawrence on the other hand was a strong straight sets winner over both Kin Nam Liu and Olivier Barthelemy. Ben Foss opened his account for the weekend with a 4-set win over Barthelemy, whilst Ryan Bichard concluded the fixture with a tight 5 set win over Liu after he fought back from 2-1 down.
The afternoon encounter was against a Colin Deaton 1 side that saved a bottom placed finish by virtue of their victory and the sets difference previously mentioned. It was a reverse of the 6-3 win that the Sarnians had obtained when these sides met earlier this season, albeit they were without Timothy Denby last time out and he made a difference this time, as he contributed to 3 of the 6 rubbers won by the Draycott outfit. Denby defeated Lawrence in 4 sets and Bichard in straight sets as well joining Jake Meikle to edge out Josh and Lawrence in 5 sets in the doubles rubber. Lawrence did well to fight back from a 2-1 deficit to oust Meikle 14-12 in the decider, whilst Bichard too fought back from 2-1 down to overcome Mark Firth. Joshua picked up the 3rd victory for the Guernsey side as he too dispatched Firth in 5 sets.
That result left too much to do for the Guernsey side, who were faced with the daunting challenge of competing against the league’s top 2 sides on the final day of action. The Butterfly Lilleshall 1 and EBaTT 1 sides have been dominant this season, with just 3 losses between them in the 14 fixtures contested.
The Guernsey side performed admirably however and restricted these top sides to 6-3 victories, having lost 9-0 and 8-1 earlier in the season. Champions Butterfly Lilleshall were first up and Foss and Lawrence each defeated their number 2 Hui Yeung Elliott Chan in 4 sets. Joshua did well to dispatch Paul Cicchelli in straight sets. Ultimately however, former Welsh International Daniel O’Connell, ranked just outside the top 50 in England, proved to be the difference, with him contributing to 3 key wins.
Joshua put in his best performances of the weekend during the defeat to EBaTT 1 in the final match of the weekend. He powered past England number 92 Christopher Lewis in straight sets before comfortably dispatching Guy Ben-Aroya in straight sets. Lawrence continued his record of winning singles matches in each game during the weekend well, as he battled past England number 103 Sammy Kaye 12-10 in the deciding 5th end. He came remarkably close to a double, however Agnelo Naik fought back from 2-0 down to win the final 3 sets 12-10, 11-6, 13-11 to pinch it. Another match to just fall at the wayside was the doubles which saw Foss and Bichard lead Kaye and Ben-Aroya 2-0 before falling to defeat, 11-9 the score in the concluding 5th set. On another day, this fixture could have resulted in a fantastic 5-4 victory for the Sarnians, showing the strong efforts shown and small margins between success and failure.
The second team started with a big clash against an Isle of Man team that were bottom heading into the encounter. Unfortunately, a 6-3 defeat was incurred, which was a mirror result of the earlier season meeting between the sides. Singles victories were however picked up by Matthew Casey, Samuel Clark, and Connor Powell in this match, whilst Joseph Bourgaize narrowly missed out to Duncan Alexander in 5 sets despite leading 2-1. Furthermore the doubles was lost in 5 sets by Casey and Bourgaize, again from the duo having held a 2-1 advantage.
4th placed side Albert TTC defeated the Guernsey side 6-3, despite an unbeaten match of singles action for Casey. Casey fought back well from 2-1 down in the match opener to overcome Albert’s number 1 Andrew Davies, whilst he came out on the right side of another tight tussle with Valdas Semiotas, 11-9 in the 5th and deciding set. Bourgaize got off the mark in this fixture courtesy of a fine 4 set win over Davies.
The final day’s action saw a crucial 5-4 victory obtained a Halton TTC 3 side, ensuring that a bottom place finish was not on the cards. This fixture was a true team effort as it saw all players contribute to the result. Clark and Powell each defeated James Bowman, whilst Casey battled back well from 2-1 down to edge Theo Bishop 11-9 in the deciding set. Bourgaize earned a super 5 set win over number 1 Forster Chiu despite having trailed 2-0, whilst he also combined well with Casey to win a pivotal doubles clash over Chiu and James Courtney, in 4 sets.
The final match of the season saw a 7-2 defeat inflicted at the hands of 5th placed side Halton TTC 2. Casey completed what was a very solid weekend, which saw him win 6 of his 8 singles matches. Once more however he needed to do so via some close matches. His first match saw him 2-1 down to Daniel Clarke before pulling through 11-9 in the deciding end, whilst it was an identical story in his clash with George McDonnell, once more battling back from the brink at 2-1 down, securing the 5th set by a narrow 11-9 score.
All eyes now turn to the inter-island front as Jersey plays host to the annual Channel Island Championships and Inter-Insulars at Fort Regent next weekend. The evening of Friday 25 April will see the Guernsey Island Champions battle their Jersey Counterparts across all 21 categories, whilst Saturday 26 April will see the Sarnians going head-to-head in inter-insular 3 person team action across 13 categories, where the Aggregate trophy will be highly sought after, as well as the flagship Green and Margaret Trophies.
It was a difficult start for Guernsey’s squads in the first round of this season’s British Clubs Leagues. Playing in a familiar venue in Halton, the Guernsey ‘A’ team compete in National League A, the third division of the revamped league structure, but experienced defeat against some strong opposition. The team consisted of Joshua Stacey, Ben Foss, Ryan Bichard and reserves Andy Gill and Jamie Ferbrache. They started off with an 8 -1 loss to Draycott 1, and although there were some creditable performances against high class opposition, Stacey gained the only match win, beating Adam Feargrieve, ranked 155 in England. Ben Foss put in a good showing but narrowly missed out against David Arrowsmith 3-2 and 42nd-ranked Artur Veeck Caltabiano 3-1.
The second much of the day also ended 8-1 against the Sarnians as they faced East Midlands TTC 1. This Ben Foss gained the solitary win with a 3-2 battle over mainland-based Caesarean Luke Greenfield, triumphing 13-11 in the 5th game.
Sunday morning started with a marginally better result, going down 7-2 to North Ayrshire 2, this time Foss and Joshua Stacey each claimed wins, the former overcoming Nathan Hogg, while Stacey played well to earn a straight sets victory over David Hay. There were also narrow losses for the Sarnians in the doubles contest as well as Foss’s individual match against Chris Main where he lost deuce in the 5th game, showing that the team have a chance of taking points in the reverse fixture later in the season. The weekend concluded with an 8-1 defeat against Allied TTC, this time Ryan Bichard with the sole win in the 5th game against Olivier Barthelemy.
The Guernsey ‘B’ team consisted of Joe Bourgaize, Matt Casey and Sam Clark as well as Ferbrache and Gill. They also got off to a tricky start with an 8-1 loss to Ward Road Warriors Dundee, the league newcomers clearly have strength in depth as they won 6 of the rubbers in straight sets, although Bourgaize did well to defeat Callum Riddoch. A close match followed as they lost to Birmingham TTA 1 by a score of 6-3. The Sarnians raced into a 3-1 lead with Ferbrache, Casey and Clark all claiming victories, but Birmingham’s experienced Ed Lynn proved too strong and the last 3 rubbers were all lost on the deciding set, proving that there is little to separate the teams.
Sunday brought a 7-2 loss to Aberdeen & District with Matt Casey doing well to defeat Andrew McRae, before the team went down to the Isle of Man 6-3, Bourgaize, Gill and Clark with the wins.
While both teams returned winless, they will be looking to rectify this during the next round of matches on 16th and 17th November.
With the domestic table tennis season having commenced a few weeks ago, all but the leading Division 1 players have begun their campaigns. Some of the Island’s top players are due to travel to the UK this weekend for the commencement of action in the Senior British National Leagues for the 2024/25 season, in a rare occurrence which will see this take place prior to the start of the top-flight of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues locally, which is due to start the following week.
Guernsey has committed itself to the British National League structure this campaign as it will see teams competing in both the Veterans and Junior versions, starting a few weeks down the line.
The immediate priority however is the Senior British Club Leagues, with 2 Sarnian squads ready to travel to Widnes in Cheshire to compete at the Halton Regional Table Tennis Centre. The first team is unchanged from last season and is dominated by all 4 individuals that made up the successful Inter-Insular Green Trophy team from earlier this year in the form of Ben Foss, Joshua Stacey, Lawrence Stacey and Ryan Bichard, who was the man of the match in that big clash, replacing Foss due to injury. Lawrence is unavailable for the first weekend of action and defending Island Over 50’s Men’s Doubles champion, Andy Gill, will be stepping in to reserve.
The second team on the other hand consists of Jamie Ferbrache, Joseph Bourgaize, Matthew Casey, and Sam Clark, with Connor Powell set to play in the third round of fixtures in December, due to the absence of Bourgaize.
Guernsey 1 has been competing in National A-1 for the past few seasons, this being the third tier of the pyramid, behind only the Premier and Championship Divisions. Last season they finished in 5th position and will be hopeful of improving upon that this season, following a number of narrow defeats last time out. The other 7 teams in National A-1 share several familiarities with the prior season, as 4 of them competed in this Division alongside Guernsey last season.
On the new clubs to the Division is eBaTT 1, who are a table tennis club from London, guided by Eli Baraty, who is registered as the number 3 player. Eli is a leading table tennis coach in England and also an ITTF qualified coach. Their highest ranked player is Sammy Kaye, who is just outside the top 50 in the English Senior Men’s ranking list. Another of the new clubs is Butterfly Lilleshall 1 and on paper they look like they could be very hard to beat. Their leading player is Ferenc Horvath, who is equivalently ranked 36 in the Senior Men’s rankings, whilst they also have Veterans Michael O’Driscoll and Paul Cicchelli, ranked 58 and 64, respectively.
The final new club is Allied TTC and this is led by England Number 44 Rhys Davies and also contains a familiar face in the 9th best Veteran in England, Ritchie Venner. Venner competed in Guernsey over the weekend at the Veterans Home Nations competition and won team gold and Men’s Doubles alongside Darren Griffin in the Over 50’s category. He also claimed a silver in the Over 50’s Men’s Singles, losing out narrowly in 5 sets to England’s 3rd best veteran Jason Ramage.
East Midlands TTC 1 have Lewis Waddup and Jersey’s Luke Greenfield in their line-up, both players ranked inside the top 50, whilst Draycott 1 have England number 42 Artur Veeck Caltabiano and the returning Naphat Boonyaprapa. Boonyaprapa is a former winner of the English National Junior Boys Doubles and a former England representative.
Guernsey 2 on the other hand is in a similar boat and share the Division with a number of the same teams as last season, including Isle of Man. Newcomers Birmingham TTA 1 appear to be strong on paper as their top player Edward Lynn is ranked just outside the top 150 in the English Men’s rankings. There are also a few unknowns in the former of Scottish based clubs Ward Road Warriors – Dundee and Aberdeen and District.
