Some of Guernsey’s leading veteran table tennis players competed well in the 2019 Home Countries Veterans Table Tennis Tournament held in Perth, Scotland last weekend. The event contained some of the best veterans from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Jersey and the Isle of Man. Guernsey were represented in teams across most of the available age groups including Over 40’s and 50’s Men, Over 50’s Ladies and Over 60’s and Over 70’s Mixed events.
The outcome for the Sarnian contingent were 2 well deserved medals.
The strong ladies outfit of Dawn Morgan and Kay Chivers performed best in the team event and took a superb bronze medal from their event and were unlucky not to edge England to silver, having beaten England 1, Wales and Scotland, whilst narrowly losing out to England 2 and Ireland.
During the event Morgan earned some excellent victories including wins over the 3 of the top 4 Over 50’s ladies in England in the form of no 1, Sue Collier, no 2, Michelle Reeves and no 4, Jane Vickers. Chivers also came close against these strong players, narrowly losing deuce in the fifth three times, whilst winning other key matches along the way.
In the over 40’s men, Tim Le Page played a cameo role in the extremely tough division, whilst in the over 50’s men, Craig Dunning made a good debut taking games off several players and Andy Gill won three matches which included victories over the Irish no 3 and the Scottish no 3, who is ranked 25 in Scotland.
In the over 60s, the four-person mixed team of Lionel Jones, Peter Vivian, Sue Ferbrache and Rob Vile faced tough opposition, but won notable rubbers against Scotland and the Isle of Man, despite going down 5-2 in both.
In the over 70s, Keith Opie, Ken Falla and Maurice James had some close fought matches, narrowly losing to Scotland, Scotland 2 and Ireland, 3-2 in each but beating Wales 4-1 and more importantly seeing off Jersey 3-2, with Ken Falla the star in the match, winning his 2 singles matches against JTTA president Paul Routier and Peter Hinds.
In the individual events, Kay Chivers narrowly lost in the over 60s singles to Jersey’s Kay Lefebvre 11-9 in the fifth, with the latter Caesarean teaming up with Sue Ferbrache to win silver in the individual doubles competition.
