Post date: Nov 15, 2020 10:47:6 PM
The penultimate day of action from the 2019/20 Island Championships was another busy day, with a further 7 events contested. This culminated in the afternoon with the entertaining Mixed Doubles event, the first flagship open doubles event of the Championships thus far.
Afternoon Session
Mixed Doubles: Phil Ogier & Sam Kershaw (3) bt Paul Hainsworth & Charlotte Casey Full results
Mixed Doubles
The Mixed Doubles event threw up a surprise in that there was always going to be a new pair on the trophy before the event started as whilst a number of entrants in the tournament had won the title before, none of the combinations playing alongside each other had won as a pair before.
The event also threw up some unexpected results as it saw the final being contested between last year's defeated finalists and 3rd seeds Phil Ogier and Sam Kershaw against the unseeded combination of Paul Hainsworth and Charlotte Casey.
In a topsy-turvy final, it was Ogier and Kershaw that increased their level from 2-2 as they powered through to clinch their maiden title over 6 ends.
Earlier they had picked up the first big surprise of the event by defeating top seeds Josh Stacey and Paula Le Ber in straight sets.
Hainsworth and Casey had also done it the hard way as they started with a 5 set win over 4th seeds Kay Chivers and Keith Opie before defeating Carly and Jayden Tucknott in the Quarter Finals in straight sets. Their semi final encounter saw another upset, as they overcame 2nd seeds Ryan Bichard and Dawn Morgan over 6 well contested sets.

Veterans Open Singles (Over 40's)
Phil Ogier had earlier seen further success in the Veteran's Open Singles where he dispatched 2nd seed Mark Pipet over 5 sets to clinch his 7th consecutive title in this event.
He had earlier picked up a straight sets win over 3rd seed Jez Powell, whilst Pipet defeated the unseeded Craig Dunning in 5 sets in the other semi-final.
Veterans Open Doubles (Over 40's)
Ogier made it 3 titles on the day due to triumph in the Veteran's Open Doubles alongside Jez Powell. They defeated the unseeded duo of Kay Chivers and Keith Opie in straight sets in the final.
They had beaten Derek Webb and Andre Bichard in 5 sets in the first semi final, whilst Chivers and Opie had earned themselves an impressive 5 set win over Andy Gill and Ian Le Page to add to their even more impressive 5 set win over 2nd seeds Dawn Morgan and Martin Sarre in the Quarters.
Under 18 Women's Singles
Erin Vaudin got her hands on the Under 18 Women's Singles title after she beat 2nd seed Melissa Johns over 6 sets in the final. She had narrowly come short last season when she lost in 6 sets to Shelby Timms.
Johns had earlier put in a strong performance to defeat Timms in straight sets, whilst Vaudin had defeated Tia Timms in straight sets in an earlier round.
Under 18 Men's Singles
Top seeded Ellis Tomlin picked up the Under 18 Men's Singles title thanks to a straight sets win over unseeded Caden Brouard in the final.
Tomlin had earlier needed 5 sets to get past James Crocker, whilst Brouard had held his nerve excellently in an epic encounter with second seed Ben Sharp. Brouard had led 3-1 before Sharp forced the match into a deciding end. The deciding end could have gone either way, but Brouard held tough and clinched it by the narrowest of margins 12-10.
Under 18 Open Doubles
Brouard's strong day was rewarded with a title in the Under 18 Open Doubles alongside Ben Sharp. The top seeds never looked in doubt and they defeated second seeds James Crocker and Jonah Ingrouille 4-0 in the final.
Crocker and Ingrouille had earlier avoided a scare as Max Burrows and Erin Vaudin were comfortably leading 3-1 before the seeds won the remaining 3 sets 11-9, 12-10, 11-3.
Women's Veterans Singles (Over 40's)
Dawn Morgan picked up her 3rd title of the 2019/20 Championships by winning the Women's Veteran Singles. In picking up her 10th title in this category, she also levelled affairs in total title wins with her opponent on the day, Kay Chivers.
In a repeat of the Women's Singles final from the night before, she matched the feat of winning over 5 sets.
Morgan had beaten Jenny Powell in straight sets in the first semi final, whilst Chivers had a battle against Sam Kershaw, but won in 5 sets.
