The fourth and final Deutsche Bank Junior Banded Tournament of the season took place on Saturday 9th March 2019.

The band winners and runners-up
The 3rd Deutsche Bank Junior Banded Tournament of the season took place on Saturday 2nd February and there appeared to be a changing of the guard at the top end of the tournaments with a number of younger players contesting for the top honours. Band 1 was incredibly close with four players having similar records. Caden Brouard battled through to win his maiden top band title, with the loss to his older brother Corey being his sole defeat. Despite beating the eventual winner, Corey finished the tournament in fourth place as Ben Sharp and Callum Gilson played their way into second and third respectively.
Band 2 was also hotly contested, with Erin Vaudin eventually coming out on top. It was a close affair and Erin didn’t have it all her own way with most of her matches going the three set distance as well as a 2-1 loss to Shelby Timms. Max Burrows took second place, with his only defeat coming at the hands of the impressive Vaudin.
Alderney’s Megan Simonet put together an almost perfect performance on her way to taking the Band 3 title, dropping a single set against Courtney Benfield. It was a rather close affair between second and fourth, with Daniel Lasenby edging out the Ridunian pair of Alex Jakubowski and Benfield to take second place.
Band 4 was fairly even though Evan Lesbirel put together an assured performance to finish the day unbeaten. Grace Milan demonstrated the great progress she has made this year as she defeated Island under-11 runner-up Jamie Regan 3-2 to claim the second spot, thus relegating Regan to third.
Band 5 was an open contest with all players picking up at least one win. Tom Syer put in a great string of performances to claim the title with Daisy Burrows ultimately finishing in second. Both players showcased how much they have developed over the course of the year with some fearless attacking shots.
The top end of Band 6 was also incredibly close but was eventually won by Alex Hutchinson, whose only defeat was at the hands of Noah Bartlett. Bartlett also put in a solid performance and took second spot, with Alex Lowe finishing in third. Caitlin Jouhning was awarded the player of the day award.
Deutsche Bank #2 - November 2018
Ellis Tomlin claimed his second consecutive Band 1 title at the November Deutsche Bank Junior Banded tournament. This was the second Deutsche Bank event out of four held during the regular table tennis season and there was a sizeable entry of 38 players, varying from the elite under-18 players to new under-11s just starting out under the guidance of Development Officer Otilia Badescu.
In the absence of Ben Foss through injury, the top group was difficult to predict with a mixture of juniors from Divisions 1 and 2 of the senior leagues. Tomlin is always a tough opponent and with an increasing amount of guile now added to his trademark ferocious forehands, he ended the day undefeated over his seven matches. Caden Brouard also showed evidence of his recent rapid improvement with an excellent 2nd place, with the 14-year old beating more established players, notably older brother Corey and Division 1 player Dan Collenette.
Alderney's Island Games hopeful Melissa Johns had a disappointing tournament last month but returned to form as she dominated Band 2 with 6 wins out of 6. James Crocker finished in 2nd place, narrowly ahead of island under-12 player Jayden Tucknott on countback. Crocker's greater experience eventually showed as he won the crucial encounter with the fast-improving Tucknott 11-9, 7-11, 11-7.
Robert Naftel claimed the Band 3 title and was in excellent form only losing one set during the day, that being to Daniel Lasenby. Alderney's Holly Jenkins came runner-up, only losing to Naftel in the process, although she was also pushed close by Lasenby, eventually winning by 3 games to 2.
The Band 4 honours also went Alderney's way and this time it was Sian Craig who took the title ahead of fellow Ridunuan Alex Jakubowski. Craig was narrowly defeated by last year's island under-11 runner-up Jamie Regan, but finished in first place on countback by beating Jakubowski 11-3, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8.
Band 5 produced some of the most exciting table tennis of the day and also resulted in a countback as 3 players finished tied on 8 points overall. All afternoon there were some exceptional rallies and good attitude in the all-girls group and ultimately it was Daisy Burrows who prevailed courtesy of her better games average. She just pipped Elysia De La Mare who finished second and Remi Tomlin in third place.
Band 6 was a smaller group featuring five very new players who have only been playing table tennis for a few weeks. Emily Gavey impressed by winning all her matches, while there was a 3-way tie for second place. The calculators were at the ready and the games averages rewarded Noah Bartlett with second place, narrowly ahead of Caitlin Jouhning and Alex Hutchinson.
The all-important Player of the Day was awarded to Remi Tomlin from Band 5 for her fantastic sportsmanship and positive attitude shown throughout the day.
The next Deutsche Bank Junior Banded tournament takes place in February. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped on the day and to Mark Windsor to providing the photos.
Deutsche Bank #1 - October 2018
The first Deutsche Bank junior banded tournament of the season took place at the weekend. Turnout was up greatly upon the previous year, with a number of strong and notable performances across the day.
Band 2 was hotly contested, with Jonah Ingrouille eventually coming out on top, though was a close affair and Jonah didn’t have it all his own way, suffering a 2-0 loss to Erin Vaudin who ultimately finished eighth. This demonstrated the openness of the group of players, with all players picking up at least one win. James Crocker put in an assured performance to claim second spot.
Max Burrows continued where he left off last season, dominating band 3 without dropping a set along his way to victory while Nicole Le Noury’s 2-1 win over Holly Jenkins was enough to edge Holly out for second place.
Band 4 saw Ben Sinkinson produce an assured performance to claim the title with only a defeat to Freddie Upham being his only loss on the day. His 2-0 win over Bradley Le Noury was enough to relegate Bradley to second place, despite Bradley winning all of his remaining matches in convincing fashion. Third place went to Grace Milan, who was later awarded the player of the day award for her positive attitude and sportsmanship. Alex Jakubowski dominated band 5, beating all other players 2-0 to claim the title in dominant fashion. The fight for second place was considerably closer, with this spot being won by Daisy Burrows. Burrows’ 2-0 win over Theo Gavin gave her the edge in the race for second place, with Gavin finishing third while Tom Syer put in an impressive performance on his way to fourth spot.
Band 6 saw many new faces competing for the first time, with Isaac Adams claiming top spot with nine 2-0 victories. His sister Grace claiming second place with her only losses being against Isaac and Charlotte Dicker. Band 1 was opened up following Ben Foss being unable to take part due to work commitments, with Ellis Tomlin putting in a dominant display to claim the title. His 2-1 victory over Corey Brouard proved to be the deciding factor as a win for Brouard would have seen him pip Tomlin to the title.
