Cenkos Panthers A have claimed their first ever 1st division
league title with 3 matches to spare following an 8-2 triumph over 4th placed
Whistlers A. Oliver Langlois and Adam Langlois both won their 3 singles
encounters over Mark Pipet, Phil Hunkin and Martyn Gaudion. They also combined
to defeat the Whistlers pairing of Gaudion and Hunkin in a 4 game doubles
victory. Gaudion and Hunkin each picked up consolation victories over Matt
Stubbington to prevent the whitewash. Lions A ensured that they will finish as
league runners-up following a 7-3 victory over 3rd placed Whistlers B. Phil
Ogier won all 3 of his singles encounters over Jez Powell, Dawn Morgan and
Martin Sarre. Paul Hainsworth added victories over Sarre and Morgan and also
teamed up with Ogier to defeat Morgan and Powell in a 5 game doubles victory.
Liam Robilliard also turned around a 2-1 deficit to defeat Powell in a tight
5th game. For the Whistlers side, Powell defeated Hainsworth in 5 games and
Sarre and Morgan both defeated Robilliard.
Division 2
League leaders Whistlers C did not play a match this week. The
notable result of the week was the surprise victory by 5th placed side St Pauls
A over 2nd placed side Whistlers D. In the encounter, Maurice James and Bob
Cherry each won 2 of their 3 singles encounters. James defeated Derek Webb and
3rd division reserve Elizabeth Priest and Cherry defeated Lawrence Stacey and
Priest. Trevor Bourgaize chipped in with an important 4 game victory over
Priest and he also teamed up with Cherry to clinch a pivotal straight game
doubles victory over Webb and Priest to complete the upset.
Division 3
League leaders Lions H slumped to their 6th draw of the season,
this time to Whistlers F. For the leaders, Lionel Jones defeated Andy Lihou and
reserve Tim Doughty. Reserve Jay Saha added victories over Rob Lihou and
Doughty and Graham Mallett added an important win over Doughty in the opening
match of the evening. Rob and Andy Lihou teamed up to clinch a vital 4 game
doubles victory over the Lions pairing of Mallett and Saha. For the Whistlers
side, Rob and Andy Lihou each won 2 of their 3 singles encounters against the
Lions opposition. Both Whistlers K and St Pauls B capitalised on the slip-up
and both sides moved to within a single point of the leaders. St Pauls B
leapfrog Whistlers K on games difference following a 9-1 victory over Lions I.
John Wills and Derek Carter each won their 3 singles encounters and also teamed
up to win the doubles encounter over the Lions pairing of Jenny Powell and
reserve Kasey Watson. Brian Le Cras added 2 victories, however he was defeated
in 5 games by Powell in the opening encounter of the evening, which prevented
the whitewash. Whistlers K defeated Whistlers G 6-4 in a match that saw each of
the victorious side record 2 singles victories. Sam Edwards, Alex Robinson and
Elizabeth Priest each achieved the feat to ensure that they remain in the hunt
for the title.
Division 4
Whistlers M are in a strong position to clinch the title
following a 7-3 victory over title rivals Lions K. Incredibly, the Whistlers
side started the encounter at a 3-0 deficit, as they only fielded 2 players for
the encounter. Luckily for them, James Rabey and Dave Herquin were both on good
form and each recorded victories over Val Guilbert, Val Le Messurier and Chloe
Le Tissier. They also teamed up to defeat Guilbert and Le Messurier in a 4 game
doubles victory.
