Joshes band together to celebrate victories

If one talented twin does not get you, the other just might. And so it proved in the latest Deutsche Bank Junior Banded table tennis tournament at the GTTA Centre at Hougue du Pommier. With Jack Totty having dominated the band one competition last month and his opponent in that final, Lawrence Stacey, away in Romania at a Euro training camp, Totty was considered favourite to repeat his title-winning performance.

However, it was turn of the other Stacey twin, Joshua (above), to face Totty in the final and this time there was to be no dream result for the previous winner. In a one-sided final, Stacey took the title in three straight games, 11-9, 11-5, 11-7.

In band two, it was Joshua Butler’s turn to shine as he reached the final with straight game wins over Rachel Harm and Thomas Ruff. He then faced the fast growing talent of Alex Robinson in the final. Robinson had also secured straight game wins over Luke Le Tissier and Sam Clark to reach the final, but found the in-form Butler just too difficult an opponent and went down 11-6, 11-8, 12-10

Butler Battles to Top Two finals

It could be said that Joshua Butler is one of the lesser known stars in Junior Table Tennis. With names like Stacey, Langlois and Stubbington always in the limelight it can be easy to miss JB but if you look closely at the results, he is always there or thereabouts.

And so it was in the first Deutsche Bank Junior Table Tennis Development Programme Banding Tournament of 2009. In a fine exhibition of his usual aggressive play Joshua, battled his way to the final of Band One, beating Jack Totty in the semi-final. However he lost the final in straight sets to Joshua Stacey who had beaten his twin brother Lawrence in the other semi-final/

So you would have expected that when Joshua faced Jack Totty in the final of Band Two he might repeat his semi-final result from Band One. However Jack wasn't going to be denied this time and in a four set, hard fought final Jack took the title 11 - 7, 11 - 7, 4 - 11, 11 - 5.

However anyone who knows Joshua Butler realises that it is just a matter of time before he realises his full potential and takes his place amongst the heroes of Junior Table Tennis in Guernsey.

In Band Three Sam Clark took the title in a straight sets win over Andrew Lihou. Andrew had beaten Rachel Harm in straight sets on his way to the final while Sam had to overcome the in-form Connor Gaudion in a game of epic proportions. It had looked as if Sam had thrown the game away after giving up an early lead and then losing the fourth game but he recovered well to win the fifth in a tight finish.

In Band Four Fareed Anees kept his good form from Junior League to reach the final, beating James Rabey on the way. However this was to be Alex Robinson's day as he powered past Sam King in the semi-final and reversed an early deficit in the final to beat Fareed 9 - 11, 11 - 8, 11 - 5, 12 - 10.

In Band Five Alex Findings beat Ryan Moore in straight sets to take the title. However he had to beat Edward Rowe in a 5 set epic to get there. In the other semi final Ryan Moore had beaten the in-form Harry Lewis in 4 sets.

The Band Six title went to Jack Ives following his straight sets win against Ryan Wesley. On the way he beat rising star Rachel Vivian in a fine match and also Will Corbin. Ryan Wesley meanwhile had to overcome Amber Moxom and Adil Anees to reach the final.

Once again this fine display of Junior Table Tennis speaks volumes for the health of the sport in Guernsey and gives a taste of the success to come.
