The Island Championships commenced earlier this evening and events will be played every day up to and including Thursday 26th April 2012. All events are played through to the finals, which will all be held on Island Finals night which is on Saturday 28th April from 7:00pm.
Veteran's Open Singles
The final will be contested by the top 2 seeds Mark Pipet and Phil Hunkin.
Pipet made his way to the semi finals without dropping any legs against Peter Powell or Chas Elliott. There he met 3rd seed Martin Sarre, who had dropped just a single set to 5th seed Neil Hastie in the Quarter Finals on his way there. The first 4 games were shared, but Pipet was never behind leading 1-0 and 2-1. Sarre looked to have the advantage in the 5th as he opened up a 6-4 lead, however he ran out of steam and Pipet came through in 6 games with some quality table tennis.
Phil Hunkin mirrored the top seeds' feat of making the semis without conceding as he defeated Juliette Yeaman and 7th seed Maurice James 4-0. His opponent there was 4th seed Kay Chivers who had defeated Dave Finn 4-0 in the quarters. She had earlier faced a test against GTTA president Derek Webb in a clash which she came through 4-1. The scoreline is not a complete reflection of the encounter which was hard fought, particularly the first leg which was won 19-17 by Chivers. Hunkin was always in control of the semi final encounter and despite dropping the 3rd leg to the 4th seed, he completed a 5 game win to make the final of the first event of this year's Championships.
